Novel batteries for storing solar and wind energy have gotten a lot of attention from researchers and investors, but they can’t do their job without software that tells them when and how much energy to charge and discharge. A startup called Growing
Energy Labs Inc. is developing an operating system that will give a battery system the brain to perform its tasks, and the company plans to launch a beta version of the software in a few weeks.
An operating system to manage batteries would work much like an operating system for your computer or cell phone: it coordinates the communications between the hardware and the apps to make sure the various programs, such as those for taking photos and browsing the Internet in the case of cell phones, are running well and do not interfere with each other.
